Travel the Thai Train over the Mekhong to Laos!

________________________________________________________________________

A train service inaugurated in 2009 between the Kingdoms of Thailand and Laos, crossing the Mekong River over the "Friendship Bridge". For a small fare, passengers will be ferried between Nong Khai Station in Thailand and Thanaleng in Laos.
We have taken the train in January 2010 both ways, documented this trip and the Mekong river crossing for you on the return leg!
Luck was on our side, when the low sun reflected in the mighty Asian stream, that means so much to the people along it's shores.
Read our full report with additional photos on http://www.siampedia.org! Thanaleng is the closest point to Vientiane.
Timetable:

Nong Khai - Thanaleng 09:30 AM, Thanaleng - Nong Khai 10:30 AM
Nong Khai - Thanaleng 04:00 PM, Thanaleng - Nong Khai 05:00 AM

Trip duration is 15 minutes for the 6 KM journey. A/C wagons are available at 50 Baht each way, non A/C are charged 20 Baht. Services are operated on newer rail car stock and very clean and well maintained trains surprised us positively.

Asia Travel Tipping Etiquettes

Asia.com. Asia Travel Tipping Etiquettes by Asiacom

As a traveler you should know your limits. You should know the different social conventions at your destination. You should understand tipping etiquette in this case.

• In most Asian countries like Malaysia, China, South Korea, and Japan, tipping is rare or is almost never expected.
• In Japan you can can express appreciation for good service with a slight bow or a simple arigato guzai maz.
• In Hong Kong and Singapore, an additional 10 % service charge is included in the bill, so tipping is not necessary.
• If you are not sure, ask the hotel concierge or the restaurant manager if tipping is required.
• In case tipping is expected, have spare bills ready.

You can show your gratitude for good service in many ways. Tipping is one. But in many countries in Asia, taking a bow or saying thank you with a smile goes a long way.

Angels Flight over Switzerland

Angels Flight over Switzerland by bestdestination

Switzerland was founded more than 700 years ago. Long years of peace have left their mark on our heritage, history and culture. Switzerland takes its name from the canton of Schwyz, one of the founder cantons of the Swiss Confederation. It was in the 14th century that the name Switenses was first given to the people living in the lands of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden, in Central Switzerland. In the year 1291 these three cantons formed a little Confederation called Sweiz. Some examples of Swiss celebrations:First of August, the Swiss Independence day. Zurich's spring festival, the Sechseläuten. Carnival is celebrated all over Switzerland. Hornussen, a unique sport. Onion market in Berne. Harmless Cow fights in the Valais. Locarno's piazza is a splendid open air cinema during its International Film Festival.
